Canton, I did not hold conversation with anyone. All there were strangers to me. I sometimes heard snatches of conversation. I did not hear any talk about the Shameen shooting incident, but I heard it said that certain perk and beef sellers, who had attempted to take supplies to Shameen, had been arrested by the Labout picket. I several times heard discussions about the impossibility of getting back to Hongkong. It appeared to me that many were anxious to leave Canton, but were afraid to do so.

I do not know the names of those in charge of the Union Headquarters at Canton. They never spoke to me.
